Driving Technology and Growth at PMI-SAC: with Khurram Abbasi

As the AVP of Technology at PMI-SAC, Khurram is a servant leader who is highly passionate and committed to bettering the Chapter and serving the members. With his utmost commitment to customer service, he spearheaded the modernization of the Chapter’s technology discipline and assets over the past year. He also built an in-house technology team to implement the Chapter’s Service Desk and standardized procedures to keep the Chapter’s information secure and accessible. All these initiatives are bringing the Chapter to the next technological level. In this interview, Khurram shares his insights on being part of PMI-SAC and how volunteering impacts his professional journey.

1. What inspired you to start volunteering with PMI-SAC?

It started with a referral from a work acquaintance who encouraged me to get involved, and from there it became about more than just giving back my time. I wanted to give back through transformation. Technology is about giving people more space to do meaningful work, not less. When I looked at PMI-SAC, I saw a community full of passionate professionals and an opportunity to simplify how we operate. By bringing in automation and clear digital processes, volunteers can spend less time on manual tasks and more time connecting, collaborating, and creating impact. That vision of building a smarter, more connected PMI-SAC community is what truly inspired me to volunteer.

2. As AVP Technology, what is something most people do not know about the tech work happening behind the scenes at PMI-SAC?

Most people do not realize how much is happening behind the scenes to modernize PMI-SAC’s technology. We are building the chapter’s first IT Service Hub, consolidating systems across portfolios, and developing a living knowledge base so volunteers can find what they need instantly. Automation is being introduced to speed up approvals and simplify everyday processes, while dashboards will soon give leaders real-time visibility into service performance. Alongside this, we are strengthening our governance framework, introducing new policies, and prioritizing data protection and security at every level. It is a quiet but powerful transformation that will make technology simpler, smarter, and more sustainable for everyone in the chapter.

3. How does volunteering at PMI-SAC connect to or enhance your professional life?

Volunteering at PMI-SAC is like working in a live innovation lab. It is super exciting. We get to design governance frameworks, build automation, and align technology with strategy, the same challenges I tackle professionally but in an environment that encourages creativity and experimentation. It is a chance to test ideas, lead changes, and see immediate impact within the community. Every step in transforming PMI-SAC’s digital landscape strengthens my professional toolkit, sharpens my leadership, broadens my technical perspective, and reminds me how technology can bring people and purpose together.

4. What do you enjoy most about being part of the volunteer community?

What I enjoy most about being part of the volunteer community is the people. It is an incredible team of about 100 volunteers supporting a chapter of more than 4,700 members. It truly feels like a powerhouse of professionals from diverse backgrounds such as IT, finance, engineering, education, and more, all united by a shared purpose to make an impact. I have met amazing people at board and chapter meetings, where great conversations and genuine connections make every event
memorable.

A funny side note, at a recent PMI-SAC event, I ran into a colleague from work whom I had collaborated with for years but never met in person. We identified each other through the Microsoft Teams DP.

I enjoy the work because here, your colleagues become your family, and that sense of belonging makes every contribution more meaningful. I also admire the compassion, professionalism, and genuine collaboration within this group.

5. For someone thinking, “I’d love to volunteer, but I’m not sure where to start,” what would you say to encourage them to take that first step with PMI-SAC?

Just start. You do not need to have it all figured out; you just need a passion to serve and a willingness to learn. Volunteering with PMI-SAC is not about having all the answers, it is about joining a community that builds, experiments, and grows together. Whether you are technical, creative, strategic, or simply enjoy helping others, there is a place for you here.

You will find yourself challenged, inspired, and surrounded by people who often become like family. Think of it as joining an innovation hub where ideas turn into impact and the sky is truly the limit.
