Volunteer Spotlight: Chair of the Professional Development

The PMI South Alberta Chapter is proud to recognize Santhush de Silva for his pivotal role in delivering the landmark 45th Anniversary Professional Development Conference (PDC) in November 2025.

As PDC Chair, Santhush exemplified the core values of our chapter – mastery, professionalism, and involvement. Santhush’s impact is defined by his commitment to continuity. By stepping up once again as the PDC Chair for 2026, he is ensuring a seamless knowledge transfer that will elevate our flagship event to even greater heights. We celebrate his leadership and his ongoing contributions to the growth of PMI-SAC.

What inspired you to start volunteering with PMI-SAC?

What inspired me to start volunteering with PMI-SAC was the opportunity to give back to the project management community that provides so much value to professionals at every stage of their careers. PMI-SAC is also supported by an incredible group of passionate and dedicated volunteers, and being part of that environment was something that really resonated with me. I’ve always had a strong passion for events, productions, and project management, so the opportunity to contribute in a role where those interests come together was very exciting.

What’s something most people don’t know about your role at PMI-SAC?

Many people see the final event, but they don’t always see the scale of planning and leadership behind it. As PDC Chair, the role is highly entrepreneurial and resembles running a business—bringing together strategy, budgeting, partnerships, marketing, operations, and a talented volunteer team to deliver a meaningful experience for the community.

How does volunteering at PMI-SAC connect to or enhance your professional life?

Volunteering at PMI-SAC has been a valuable extension of my professional life. I’ve also learned a great deal from the volunteers I’ve worked with, and being surrounded by people who are so willing to contribute their time and expertise is both energizing and inspiring. One of the biggest lessons I’ve gained is the importance of leadership through influence rather than authority. In a volunteer environment, you are working with talented professionals who generously give their time, so success comes through building trust, creating alignment, motivating others, and working toward a shared purpose.

What do you enjoy most about being part of the volunteer community?

What I enjoy most about being part of the volunteer community is the people. You have the opportunity to meet amazing personalities from all walks of life, each bringing different experiences, perspectives, and strengths. That diversity creates an inclusive and dynamic environment where everyone can learn from one another. There is also a strong sense of belonging and shared purpose that makes it feel like being part of a special community.

For someone thinking, “I’d love to volunteer, but I’m not sure where to start,” what would you say to encourage them to take that first step with PMI-SAC?

I would encourage them to visit www.pmisac.com and explore the current volunteer opportunities. If you do not immediately see something that aligns with your interests or experience, reach out to the chapter directly or attend one of our events to meet people and learn more. PMI-SAC is a very welcoming community, and our Vice President of Volunteer Management and their team do a fantastic job helping new volunteers navigate the process and find the right fit. You do not need to have everything figured out before you begin — taking that first step can open the door to meaningful connections, personal growth, and rewarding experiences.
