Volunteer Spotlight – Membership AVP
Since taking on the role of Membership AVP, Ward has consistently demonstrated
outstanding passion, dedication, and commitment to PMI. He is always willing to step up
and support events, taking on tasks with enthusiasm while ensuring they are completed
to the highest standard with great attention to detail. His positive attitude, reliability, and
unwavering commitment to excellence have helped promote PMI in a positive light and
made a meaningful impact on both the organization and its members. Besides the
volunteer role, he is also a company ambassador and mentor.

What inspired you to start volunteering with PMI-SAC?
A co-worker of mine was on the PMI-SAC board and knew I was looking for ways to get
involved. He encouraged me to become a Company Ambassador and a Mentor. I was
unsure I had the skills or experience required, but I gave it a shot. That first step gave
me the confidence and inspiration to become more involved, ultimately leading to my
current AVP role.

What’s something most people don’t know about your role at PMI-SAC?
Over my career as a PM and other functions before that, this is the first time I have actually volunteered in any capacity.

How does volunteering at PMI-SAC connect to or enhance your professional life?
I would say there are two distinct ways volunteering has enhanced my professional life.
First, it has enabled me to make numerous professional connections within TELUS
(where I work) and external to TELUS. These connections enable professional
development that I may not have been able to realize without volunteering. The other is
helping me improve my skills for engaging with stakeholders and leading initiatives.

What do you enjoy most about being part of the volunteer community?
Definitely the camaraderie and support system.

For someone thinking, “I’d love to volunteer, but I’m not sure where to start,”
what would you say to encourage them to take that first step with PMI-SAC?
Go to an event and meet the team. Make yourself known and connect with the other
volunteers.
